Maps installed successfully, but car doesn't recognise the data. Used new card in Discovercare, all criteria satisfied, formatted to Fat32, capacity 64GB & overwrite switch unlocked. Downloaded partition manager and reformatted SD card to Fat32. Saw that perhaps Discovercare/infotainment may want an SD card formatted to Fat32, My Sandisk 64GB is ExFat.

Formatted card and used Discovercare application to install maps to new card - Successful, but car doesn't recognise the data. Downloaded the large Maps file from the VW website and extracted/unzipped to new card.

I then bought a 64GB Sandisk SDXC Class 10 Card(Trying to future proof for any more enormous map updates). Nil fix, probably due to me not having whatever hidden VW files on the card anymore post formatting. Formatted the card and just tried to drag the relevant map folders over to my card. Why the Discovercare app can't point towards this, post failure seems like a poorly designed Software.

I since learned that the latest update is more like 30GB so this would never work. I first updated the original 16GB card but it failed many times. So i decided to update the Original 16GB SD card. My maps first got a little glitchy last month and i also started to notice some new roads in my area weren't shown on my maps. I'm really struggling to regain my maps function. It takes a while, but it continues to run even when the “ignition” is off.I'm sure this has been done to death but i can't find any information here. I selected to use an old Western Digital 250GB external hard drive, and since Win 10 do not format in FAT32 above 32GB (only exFAT) I used a tool from WD for formatting it to FAT32: “External USB/FireWire Fat32 Formatting Utility” ( ). I have a 32GB USB stick that Win 10 formats to FAT32, but the EU map is now to large and do not fit into that. I will contact BMW support and see what their solution is and update here to help anybody else stuck in the same situation.įaced the same issue here. I’ve managed to buy a BMW Navigation Map update but it has to have a FAT32 formatted USB drive larger than 32GB which appears to be impossible. I tried forcing a format to FAT32 using Command Prompt but that returns an error “The Volume is too big for FAT32” I even tried Fat32Formater 3rd party app to try and force the format of 64GB to FAT32 but the BMW Download App still rejected it. This is where the fun happens, you cannot format a 64GB USB drive as FAT32 you can only format it as exFAT or NTFS but the BMW Download manager rejects exFAT and NTFS file formats and requests FAT32 but you simply can’t have a FAT32 formatted drive larger than 32GB! No problem, I have 64GB drives around too…

So I put in a 32GB thumb drive and it says there’s not enough free space because 32GB is actually only 31.25GB (1024bits in a byte and all that fun stuff) which meant the 31.38GB it said it needed is actually too much to fit on a 32GB USB drive so you need a 64GB drive. I left if going and when it was all done and downloaded it presented me with the following: However, they cap the download speed, so what should have taken <1 hour on my 100mbps leased line took 18 hours. That’s all ok as BMW offer a nifty BMW Download Manager that handles the download to make sure such a large file download doesn’t get interrupted. If you purchase the latest version of GPS navigation maps from BMW you don’t receive a disc/DVD or over the air updates, you have to download a whopping 32GB of data to put onto a USB drive to carry out the update.
